10 Syndromes Named After Literary Works/Characters

I didn't write this post. I just reblogged it from Fuck Yeah Book Art's tumblr. I consider this article is interesting, so I share it here. x

10 Syndromes Named After Literary Works or Characters

1. Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

Unlike the namesake of this disorder, sufferers of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome perceive their body parts and other objects in altered sizes even if they don’t consume weird things with “Drink Me!” or “Eat Me!” on their labels. :P AIWS is commonly associated with migraines, brain tumors, use of psychoactive drugs, and signs of epilepsy and mononucleosis. This is also called Todd’s Syndrome.

2.Rapunzel Syndrome

This syndrome is named after the fairy tale princess with beautiful and astonishingly long hair in one of Brothers Grimm’s bedtime stories. The Rapunzel Syndrome is a rare intestinal condition in humans resulting from tricophagia, or the abnormal urge to eat one’s hair. This diagnosis is medically referred to as trichobezoar. In ancient times, the hair found in intestinal tracks are believed to be an elixir of some sort, able to cure lots of diseases.

3. Cinderella Syndrome

Named after the main character in one of Charles Perrault’s fairy tales, this syndrome refers to the common phenomenon in kids where they make exaggerated stories about how they are abused, mistreated, or neglected by adoptive/step-parents. This is different from ‘Cinderella Complex’, which is said to be women’s fear of independence and an unconscious desire to be taken care of by ‘stronger’ others (like metaphorical Fairy God moms or Princes Charming).

4. Peter Pan Syndrome

“I don’t want to grow up!” says J.M. Barrie’s popular character from Neverland. According to pop-psychology, sufferers of Peter Pan Syndrome are adults who are socially immature. They tend to avoid responsibilities and often feel the need to be mothered.

5. Dorian Gray Syndrome

This syndrome is named after the handsome main character of Oscar Wilde’s book The Picture of Dorian Gray who sells his soul so that his portrait will age instead of himself. Sufferers of DGS are characterized by an excessive preoccupation with their physical appearances and youth, thus having problems in terms of coping with aging. Often, people with DGS have narcissistic traits and are heavily reliant on cosmetic procedures and products.

6. Othello Syndrome

Sufferers of Othello syndrome, very much like the namesake of this disorder from one of Shakespeare’s works, are characterized by intense and often delusional distrust of their partners. This syndrome is also called morbid jealousy and is often associated with alcoholism and sexual dysfunction. It can also be found in the context of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

7. Pollyanna Syndrome

Named after Eleanor Porter’s protagonist in her best-selling children’s book, Pollyanna Syndrome is the psychological phenomenon wherein a person becomes blindly or foolishly optimistic to a point that it’s almost delusional.

8. Emperor’s Clothes Syndrome

The Emperor’s Clothes Syndrome is more like a mentality than a disorder. It got its name from Hans Christian Andersen’s tale where no one in town—until the kid speaks—is pointing out that the Emperor is naked because no one wants to be called ‘stupid’ or ‘unfit’ for their positions. People who have ECS claim that they know something even if they don’t, in order to avoid being judged as stupid or intellectually inferior to others.

9. Mowgli Syndrome

This syndrome is named after the beloved main character of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Mowgli. Mowgli is a boy who is raised by animals. Kids with this syndrome are said to have weak mental and/or physical traits, especially those who have suffered tremendous emotional stress due to parental neglect and abuse.

10. Huckleberry Finn Syndrome

This is named after one of Mark Twain’s boy characters that became darlings to the readers, Huck Finn. It’s a psychodynamic complex in which the obligations and responsibilities avoided as a child, eventuate into frequent job changes and absenteeism as an adult. The HFS may be a defense mechanism linked to parental rejection, low self-esteem and depression in an intelligent person.

Dexter Season 6 - Will It be the End of the Journey?

"People think it's fun to pretend you're a monster. Me, I spend my life pretending I'm not."
- Dexter

"There is no light in you. There is no light in me"
- Dexter

(attention: do not read this post if you don't like spoiler)

This year, Dexter—an American TV series about Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), blood spatter analyst of Miami Police Department who's also a serial killer at night—has reached its sixth season. Personally, Dexter is one of a few of series I am still watching every week now, beside The Walking Dead and The Big Bang Theory. Aired every Sunday evening on Showtime, this series has become a TV show that I always look forward to watch on Monday night (thanks to the time differences). I have been falling in love with Dexter since I watched the first season years ago. It is interesting how a character that is supposed to be an antagonist, someone who is usually being hated, has taken lots of attentions and become a person that is loved by many people and being called "America's Favorite Serial Killer".

I usually searched for a trailer of the forthcoming season of Dexter a few weeks before it started. I did the same thing with the sixth season. From the trailer I saw on youtube, I know that this season, Dexter will involve a lot of religious elements—which is Christian of course—in their stories. Some people worried whether this theme will ruin the story and its strong-builded-characters. I felt the same way with them (ish). I always feel that religion is a sensitive topic to talk about (thanks to my culture) and we shouldn't mix it with secular thing or un-religious stuff. Beside, I wondered what will happen to Dexter and religion. Will he become a religious person?? Will he stop killing people and confess his sins? Well, please don't get me wrong. It doesn't mean that I agree with what Dexter do. It's just a movie. A fictional stories. If the stories happen in real life, of course I would be very happy if he stop killing people. So... I am actually looking forward to see what will happen in the end of this series.

Travis Marshall and Professor Gellar

Until today, Dexter sixth season has already aired eight episodes, started on October 2nd until the latest episode on November 20th. This season's main antagonist is a charismatic professor 0f religious studies named Professor Gellar (Edward James Olmos) who killed people based on Biblical scene. He gets a help from his former student, Travis Marshall (which is played brilliantly by Colin Hanks). They do the killing with reference from Book of Revelation. They leave signs of Apocalypse on their victims and crime scene, such as Alpha Omega signs, Four Horsemen and Whore of Babylon.
(note: I could write and interpret better about this sign of Apocalypse if only I understand Bible very well. It appears that I am not a good Christian.)

This season also features an important character named Brother Sam (Mos Def), even though he only shows up in six episodes. Brother Sam is an ex murderer and drug addict who has turned into a good path and become a minister. He has an auto shop and helps other ex drug addict or gang member by giving them job, shelter and better life. Dexter becomes close with Brother Sam and he is often told that he still has "light" in him. Brother Sam says that he knows the darkness inside Dexter, sees the light in him and tells him to let the darkness go. I am not sure if Brother Sam's words work on Dexter, but in this season Dexter lets his prey (Travis) go—which never happened before. He even pray (sort of) when his son, Harrison, is in hospital. Wow. Never thought this could happen to Dexter.

Another notable stories in this season are Debra's (Jennifer Carpenter) promotion on becoming a Lieutenant which is misunderstood as the reason why she rejected Quinn's (Desmond Harrington) proposal, La Guerta (Lauren V elez) who is now become a captain (which makes her more annoying), Masuka's (C. S. Lee) intern students and appearance of the new detective named Mike Anderson (Billy Brown).

I realized that Dexter has become more human since the fifth season after Rita's (Julie Benz) death, followed by his relationship with Lumen (Julia Stiles). I think this is the first time Dexter revealed his true self to someone other than his father. On sixth season, Dexter shows that he has love in him. He really shows it toward his son, Harrison. He worries about what Harrison will be when he knows that Jonah Mitchell—who is the son of Arthur Mitchell, the Trinity Killer—killed his mother and sister (revealed that she committed a suicide later).

In my opinion, Dexter sixth season is not the most interesting part of the whole seasons. The first one still become my favourite until now, followed by the forth. This season doesn't give me a thrill like the previous ones. But, I am still interested in watching it and looking forward what will happen afterward. Will Dexter repent of everything he has done? Will it be the end of this series? Let's wait and see...

Star Wars : Luke Skywalker (Bespin Outfit) DX series

Hot Toys and Sideshow have announced their forthcoming Star Wars action figure. It is Luke Skywalker sixth scale collectibles, taken from Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back—Bespin outfit. Here are the pictures of it.

Sixth scale Luke Skywalker (Bespin Outfit)

This 30 cm tall fogure will be released on May 2012, but you can pre-order it here. It cost you US$ 299.99. That's a lot of money, but I think it is worth it. In this sixth scale figure, you will get two bodies with over than 30 points of articulation, two heads with movable eyes and ten pieces of interchangeable palms. You will also get two stands, a lightsaber, blaster and special fabric costumes.

Head with movable eyes! (You can even see the pores on his skin)

Here are the detail features of this figure:

  • Authentic and detailed fully realized likeness of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker
  • One (1) newly developed, hand painted head sculpt with Parallel Eyeball Rolling System (PERS)
  • One (1) newly developed, hand painted battle damaged head sculpt with Parallel Eyeball Rolling System (PERS)
  • Movie-accurate facial expressions with detailed wrinkles and skin texture
  • Approximately 30 cm tall
  • Two (2) TrueType bodies with over 30 points of articulation
  • Ten (10) pieces of interchangeable palms including:
  • One (1) pair for gripping unlit lightsaber
  • One (1) pair of fists
  • Three (3) pieces of relaxed palms
  • One (1) magnetic severed right palm stump
  • One (1) right palm for holding blaster pistol
  • One (1) left palm for force push
  • Two (2) full costumes including:
  • One (1) khaki jacket
  • One (1) tank-top undershirt
  • One (1) pair of khaki pants
  • One (1) leather-like brown belt with blaster pistol holster and pouches
  • One (1) pair of fabric camel-colored boots
  • One (1) battle damaged khaki jacket
  • One (1) tank-top undershirt
  • One (1) pair of battle damaged khaki pants
  • One (1) leather-like brown belt with blaster pistol holster and pouches
  • One (1) pair of fabric camel-colored boots
  • Two (2) blaster pistols
  • One (1) unlit lightsaber
  • One (1) unlit lightsaber handle
  • One (1) interchangeable severed right forearm stump
  • One (1) auto-tourniquet
  • One (1) light-up Weathervane stand which can be mounted onto the wall or ceiling and allows 90 degree movement
  • One (1) figure base and one (1) figure stage with Luke Skywalker nameplate and the movie logo

That specification will definitely satisfy all action figure collectors, especially Star Wars fans, including myself. No one can resist the fantastic details of his face, costumes and accessories. I think it's the best Luke Skywalker figure ever.

I'm speechless!

From the first time I saw this figure, I am definitely in love with it. I am a fan of Luke Skywalker since the first time I watched Star Wars. I really want to have it, even though I already have Luke Skywalker action figure with the same outfit! Bespin. But it's Kotobukiya version. I know that Hot Toys' products are better than Kotobukiya's, but the prices are also way more expensive. I've been falling in love with Hot Toys' sixth scale collectibles since a long time ago, but I can't afford it. I really want to have Joker (Dark Knight version) and Jack Sparrow, but they are too expensive. Hopefully I can have Luke Skywalker figure next year.

Luke, I am your father.
NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO....!!!

They are in a Better Hand Now

Goodbye!

I am saying goodbye to these works. They will be in a better hand. I sent it to a friend in London who has become the model of the portrait painting and his band that inspired the book-arts. Not to mention, a postcard painting of a character of our favourite movie.

Well, they are actually in better hand now. His mum got this package for him yesterday. Yep, I sent it to his mum's house because he's going to be away from his current house in London next week to have a Europe tour with his band. Unexpectedly, the package arrived way sooner than I thought. It only needs a week to reach his home. What makes me happy the most is when I heard that he is looking forward to get it. He will have these works when he's home this weekend.

Package.... You have been officially traveled about 12,000 km! You brought lots of my love for him :')

Some Reviews of Ideals

Ideals on ARTROCKER

Ideals is on the latest issue of ARTROCKER magazine! I don't have the magazine because I don't know how to get it unless I buy it online. I got this picture from BW's Facebook. He uploaded it on his wall, but unfortunately it is blurry so I can barely read it. [Come on, B. You got the new Iphone 4S. Take a better picture of it! Hahaha.] After I gave my best shot to read that, I know that the article still mentioned Johnny Healey as Ideals' guitarist while Ben Smith was on the photograph. And speaking about the photo... I never saw this pic before! I saw several new photo of Ideals by White-Robot Photography few days ago, but not this one. Darn...! I love this pic! Hahaha.

Beside ARTROCKER magazine, Ideals has been reviewed on some online media as well, regarding their forthcoming EP, Let Your Anger Leave You.

This is the review from It's All Indie blog. Nice review! It definitely makes me looking forward to listening to their whole EP. It hasn't released yet and I'm not sure about the date. I've listened to 5 of 7 songs in this EP and I can't wait to listen to the other two songs, Every Time I Say It and Do You Feel Like Home.

And here is the review from Ip1zine.com. I think it's a community blog about Ipswich, their home town.

Oh, Daryl Dixon...

Promotional poster of The Walking Dead season 2

I am a bit obsessed with The Walking Dead, an American horror series about zombie apocalypse, which is based on the ongoing comic series with the same title. I actually do not read the comic, but I watch the series from the first episode until the latest episode–season 2 episode 5—which was aired on November 13, 2011. Honestly, I was a bit shocked when I first watched it. Dead men (called walkers in this series) walking, drooling, chasing people in order to eat them—those are something I (of course) do not see in my daily life. But then I slowly got "adapted" with all the walkers-eating-human-flesh or walkers-got-stabbed-or-shot-in-the-head scenes. Even I got really interested in one of the characters in The Walking Dead. He is a survivalist with top skills in hunting, killing zombies, tracking, surviving in woods and using his crossbow (a very effective and quiet weapon to kill that won't attract other zombies. Not to mention he can reuse his arrows to kill another zombies. Well, we have to support a reuse and recycle thingy these days, right?). He is.... Daryl Dixon...!!

Daryl Dixon

I was gonna search The Walking Dead comic, but I read on the internet that Daryl is not on the actual comic. So... I suddenly have no intention to read it. Hahaha. Sorry...

When I browsed on the internet earlier today, I read that McFarlane is going to release a 4 or 4 1/2 inch action figure of Daryl next month! I saw the picture and I want it. The face of the figure quite represents Norman Reedus (cast of Daryl Dixon), even though the joints on his arms are not too smooth. Or maybe because he's wearing sleeveless shirt that show the connecting parts on his arms. Well, it doesn't really matter for me. I still want this action figure... It comes with the crossbow, axe and even a string of dead squirrels.
