Mads Mikkelsen - Portrait Painting Tutorial

Helloooo, Universe!

I've been away from my blog for a long time and apparently I'm still alive. So, I decided to write again with a tutorial of my latest portrait painting. Here it is...

Mads Mikkelsen, my current obsession
I used this photo asa reference, only the head (because I'm too lazy to paint the body) and did a little improvisation with his hair:

The Gorgeous Mads

First, let's start with my colour palette. If you've read my old tutorial of Luke Skywalker painting, it's basically almost the same. Not only the colour palette, but also the whole technique. I use these colours in almost every painting I made.

Always use these colours...
Okay, you're ready with the paint now. Let's start to draw...

1. Sketch
Sketch
When making a full colour portrait painting, I usually draw a not-too-detailed-sketch. As you can see on the picture above, the sketch is basically just thin outlines. I add the details later.

2. Base colour

When the sketch is done, let's start the painting with applying base colour. For skin colour, I use white and pale orange (for sakura water colour user) or naples yellow red (for van gogh watercolour user). It doesn't have to be exactly pale orange or naples yellow red. Pale orange is the colour I used when I started to learn portrait painting. I got it in sakura transparent watercolour set, which is my favourite brand, but unfortunately, it's no longer produced. So when I ran out of the painting, I was forced to choose other brand and I ended up with van gogh watercolour's napples yellow red. I think other watercolour brands have similar colour, such as flesh tint. You can use any similar colour you like. If you don't have any, just make your own mixed colour. Since it's called pale orange, obviously you can use orange which is very pale. Just added lots of water and white colour.
After you applied this basic colour, you can go make a cup of tea or coffee while waiting it dry.

Note: For other colour, I use Cotman watercolours (Winsor & Newton)

(And sorry, apparently I forgot to put this colour on the colour palette picture above.)

3. Start the layer...

Okay, here comes the ugliest part.
Start painting the darker area on the face around his eyes, nose, lips and neck with a thin layer of yellow ochre and burnt sienna. Patience is the key of my painting. Even though it looks very ugly, but you need to keep applying a thin layer over and over again. The result will be much better than applying a thick and bold layer at once.

4. Another layer...

You've past the ugliest part. Just keep applying more layers. I use vandyke brown for darker area now. Don't put away you pale orange color because you can use it again for pinkish area, lips and cheeks.

5. Yes, still layers...

Yay! It's getting better now. For the darkest area on his face, I use sepia or dark brown. FYI, I seldom use black on my painting. If you think sepia isn't dark enough, mix it with blue (I use indigo here).

6. Don't get bored with layers

My technique is basically doing the same thing over and over again. In this stage, I still keep putting another layer until I get the colour I desire.

7. I know... It's like endless layers.

Okay, I even get bored with my own technique. What should you do when you get tired of applying layers at the same place? Just move to other area. Now I start to put basic colour on his hair. It's yellow ochre. Now you can drink the tea you've made earlier while waiting the hair dry.

8.  Don't worry... It's getting better.

After I put yellow ochre on the hair, I paint his hair layers with vandyke brown and sepia. After the dark area is done, you can add a fine line of white paint on it. Just do a single-and-confident-stroke to make a nice thin white line.

9. White paint effect!

If you like the result on the hair, let's go back to his face. You have to finish the darker layers on his face now. And here is my favourite part... Creating lighter effect with white paint. I use white gouache to make this effect because gouache has an opaque characteristic. Put the white paint on his nose, cheek bones, eyes, lips and above his eyebrow to make his face looks bright and shinny.

10. It's almost done!

I'm (almost) done with his face and hair, now it's time to paint the background. Honestly, background is supposed to be the first thing to paint before you start painting the object. But, painting background is my least favourite part, so I keep doing it at the end of my painting. It's a bad habit. Don't do it....

11. Voila!

Paint his suit and... Finally, it's done!

Thanks for reading. Please noted that this is the technique I develop through years of practise. I'm glad if this tutorial helps you improving your technique, but you don't have to follow it if you don't want to. Painting is something you have to enjoy and inventing your own method is definitely the fun way to shape your skill and make a better painting.

Oh My Star Wars...

Greetings to every creature in the galaxy far far away.

Today is February 10th Earth time and it means Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D is being released today, but sadly not in my country :'( :'( :'( Honestly, prequel trilogy is definitely not my favorite Star Wars movie... but still, I really want to see it in 3D. Not to mention, there's one of my favorite actors in this movie, Liam Neeson. Also, there are some scenes in The Phantom Menace that would be awesome if we can see it in 3D, such as the podracing and Darth Maul fighting scene. So sad I can't watch it here :(

When I heard about the news of the movie being re-released in 3D, I was a bit upset because George Lucas decided to release Episode I first. And I also heard that the whole saga will be released in 3D, one movie per year. It means the original trilogy will be released on... wait... let me count first. A New Hope on 2015, The Empire Strikes Back on 2016 and Return of the Jedi on 2017. Whaatttt??? I will be so old by the time they're released :( But now, I feel soooo lucky they chose to release Episode I first. I cannot imagine how depressed I am if I can't watch the original trilogy in 3D. Of course I never watch them on theatre and really really want to. Mostly, I am just obsessively re-watch the original trilogy DVDs.

Here are some posters of The Phantom Menace 3D.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D

I laughed when I saw this poster :))

This one is definitely my favorite.

I remember I haven't written about my Darth Maul action figure on my blog. So, I think today is the perfect time! Yes, this is one of my Star Wars collections. It is Darth Maul from Star Wars Unleashed series, produced by Hasbro on 2002. I bought this from a collector who sold some of his Star Wars collections. The figure is still in good condition and I paid for a reasonable price.

Not a new one of course, but it's still sealed.

So I opened it...
and here we go...

Glad I can have this figure as my collection. I'm still looking for another figure from Unleashed series and I'm just hoping I have money to buy them :p

Boba Fett Sketch

Good night, y'all! Or good morning to everyone on different side of the world.
It is Monday early morning here and I just can't sleep. So I grab my paper and pencil to start making something. I remember that I want to make a series of postcards of Star Wars fanart. I've made the first one, which is Luke Skywalker postcard. Since I decided to give it to a friend, I need to paint another one. But for this moment, I'm just in the mood to make another character postcard. It is Boba Fett. Here is the sketch. I'll update the progress soon!

Got a DD on DeviantArt

Book of Ideals

Hello, everyone out there in whatever galaxy you are!
I just wanna tell you that I got Daily Deviation (DD) on DeviantArt yesterday (Friday, Jan 27th). That means my chosen work will be featured on the site for a day. Which work is it? Apparently it's my papercutting-bound-into-book work. Yes, it is Book of Ideals, the artwork that I made for Ideals, the four-piece-band from London, UK. Got a DD means that everyone who visit the site most likely will see your work. That means more views, more comments and more favorites.
On the artist's description in my submission, I have put the link to Ideals' Significant Other video on YouTube. Hopefully the more people see my deviation, the more people will see the video too. And I hope some of them will like their music and find out more about them.
I checked the video out again yesterday and as long as I remember, it had 8,900-ish hits. I forgot the exact number of views. Then, I checked it out again just now and it has 9,099 views! More than 100 views in a day is not bad, isn't it? Hopefully my artwork helps the raise of number of people who watch the video. Mmm... Okay, I actually not 100% sure about it... maybe the video is more famous than that and get more than 100 views a day...? Who knows? Maybe it has nothing to do with me.

Because of the DD, I got tons of comments on this work. One of them has become my favorite. Here is the link. Or if you're to lazy to click it, just look at the picture below. I have captured the comments and my replies.

Some comments on my work

Apparently a guy on DA (I think his name is Daniel) thought that my Book of Ideals is the kind of marketing that he wish he had for his band. No no no... It is not any kind of marketing for the band. I said to him that I made it simply because I love their music. That's all. As simple as that. I made it with all my heart and patience. It was my first papercutting ever. I made several mistakes, but it turned out that I can finish it (almost) perfectly.
Back to the comment. Daniel said I just earned a ton of free publicity with this DD and he's gonna check Ideals out. Another guy on the comment said that the band must be very happy to have a friend like me. Well, guys... thank you so much for your comments. I don't know how they feel. I don't know whether my work gave them ton of free publicity. They must be still great without me. I also don't know if they are happy to have a fan and friend (If they consider me a friend) like me. Let them decide...

After I knew that I got this work featured, I instantly told them on twitter. There is no reply. That's okay. Maybe they haven't checked their twitter since it seems that they are only active on Facebook. And currently, my Facebook account is being deactivated. So, hours later, I texted one of the band member (I won't mention which member as I am afraid my word will cause any misunderstanding about something or anything... or whatsoever). I told him about this DD. Told him about the link to their video as well. And told him that I have posted the link on my twitter. Mmm... There is still no reply. That's okay. Maybe he hasn't checked his phone or maybe his phone is lost or maybe something happened that make him not able to see the message.

So... It seems that the band don't care about anything I said about my work. Or maybe they don't get my message. Or... I just don't have idea what is really happened. The most important thing to me is... I sincerely made this work for them. I even gave the original work to them. I love their music always and happy to be able to know them. This DD actually makes more people see my art. I am grateful for that. Maybe I just got too excited if I have any news related to Ideals. And maybe I should stop being too excited. Well... I don't know. I have no idea what to do next.

PS: If there is anyone who reads this blog entry become misunderstand or misinterpret or misconception or mis-whatever, I am sorry. I have tried my best to write it as normal as possible so there will be no misleading into any different topic, such as—I don't know—err... relationship maybe.... Who knows...?

EDITED
I posted about Book of Ideals got DD on my tumblr. And I just knew that it got featured on #Crafts. Wow! It makes me wonder is it work really that good? Because honestly I don't feel that way. Or maybe I just underestimate my own work?

Bombay Bicycle Club Live in Jakarta

The People's Party Jakarta 2012

Thank God It's Friday! wasn't just an ordinary phrase for all Bombay Bicycle Club's fans in Jakarta last Friday, January 13. We were really grateful for this day because the wonderful Bombay Bicycle Club was going to perform tonight at Fairgrounds (ex Bengkel Night Park). They were coming to Indonesia on the event called The People's Party, promoted by Shoundshine. Bombay Bicycle Club was not the only band that performed that night. We also have The Jezabels (Australia), The Naked and Famous (New Zealand) and Metronomy (UK). Not to mention the opening act by local band called Roman Foot Soldiers. But on this blog, I will concentrate on writing about Bombay Bicycle Club's performance since they are my favourite and they are the reason I came to this event. :)

The People's Party started at 7 pm sharp and Roman Foot Soldiers opened this event smoothly. This was the first time I heard their songs and I think they're good. The venue was still pretty empty when they performed, but we did enjoy the show. After RFS done with their job, it's time for The Jezabels to go on stage. These two bands weren't play a lot of songs, I guess. Their each performance took less than an hour.

And here we come! It's the performance I had been waiting for. Bombay Bicycle Club's crews were on the stage, preparing all the stuff for the band, including Louis Bhose. I love his band, Theme Park and I'm actually wondering how they're gonna touring when Louis is with BBC.

Bombay Bicycle Club

The crowds were going crazy as they heard Shuffle intro. Suren de Saram, Ed Nash, Jamie MacColl and Jack Steadman went on the stage to start the show. Without any further pause, they continued with Your Eyes—another song from their latest and third album A Different Kind of Fix. They were also performed their songs from the first and second albums—I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose and Flaws—such as Dust on the Ground, Evening/Morning and Ivy & Gold.

Jack Steadman

Ed Nash

Jamie MacColl

Suren de Saram

Jack Steadman (again...)

This four-piece-band kept making the audiences satisfied with their energetic performance as they sang Magnet and What You Want. The crowds—mostly girls—sang along the band perfectly. The night was getting hotter and the screams were getting louder when the band performed Lights Out, Words Gone which made all the people in the venue started to dance. (Personally, I think it would be perfect if Lucy Rose was here and sang her part of the song.) It reached the climax when Bombay Bicycle Club performed Always Like This, which had been shouted by the fans since the middle of the gig. All the audiences seemed to remember all the lyrics of this song, even Jack Steadman gave them chance to sing the part of this song loudly. After singing 13 songs, Bombay Bicycle Club closed the show with their last songs, What If. There's no encore in this show even tough all of us still wanted them to perform more and more songs.

Jack Steadman (again and again...)

Setlist:
1. Shuffle
2. Your Eyes
3. Dust on the Ground
4. Leave It
5. Lights Out, Words Gone
6. Ivy and Gold
7. Evening/Morning
8. Cancel on Me
9. Lamplight
10. Sleep
11. Magnet
12. What You Want

More Papercutting Commission

Hello there...

Recently I make more papercutting works than painting. New interesting works for me. And basically I'll do any work that gives me money. Hahaha
This time I did papercutting commission from a lovely lady called Adriane. She asked me to make three pieces of papercutting based on the story she wrote.

Here is the papercutting #1:
#1

and papercutting #2
#2

She got a great idea by connecting the story for papercutting #1 and #2. If you put those works together, you will get this one. They are now connected and they tell a story. Can you guess what it is about? :)

#1 and #2 connected together

And here is the last piece. It simply portrays two characters she made.
#3

Hope you all enjoy my work! For commission info, please go to this link and do not hesitate to contact me at tessa.feb@gmail.com

Han Solo - Star Wars Unleashed

Star Wars Unleashed series: Han Solo

Hellooo everyone out there and Star Wars fans in all galaxies!
I would like to present my newest collection of Star Wars action figure. He's the one and only Captain Han Solo—Star Wars unleashed series produced by Hasbro on 2003. I got this half-witted-scruffy-looking nerf herder action figure on the toysfair held on Dec 4th, 2011 at Blok M Plasa Jakarta. I bought this from a toys collector guy named Giri who sells some of his collections for IDR 350K. He also sold other Star Wars Unleashed series, such as Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Han Solo in trooper costume, Han Solo's hairy bestfriend—Chewbacca, Anakin Skywalker and... mmm I forgot the rest. Sorry. I was interested with Darth Maul figure as well, but I decided not to but it yet because I still have so many things I have to buy for Christmas. So I came home with Han Solo in my bag.

Apparently, I'm still thinking about Darth Maul figure I want. That's why I contacted the seller yesterday and asked him whether he still has the figure or not. Luckily, it's still there! And yeah... I bought it too. I will be shipped to my house soon.

10 Syndromes Named After Literary Works/Characters

I didn't write this post. I just reblogged it from Fuck Yeah Book Art's tumblr. I consider this article is interesting, so I share it here. x

10 Syndromes Named After Literary Works or Characters

1. Alice in Wonderland Syndrome

Unlike the namesake of this disorder, sufferers of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome perceive their body parts and other objects in altered sizes even if they don’t consume weird things with “Drink Me!” or “Eat Me!” on their labels. :P AIWS is commonly associated with migraines, brain tumors, use of psychoactive drugs, and signs of epilepsy and mononucleosis. This is also called Todd’s Syndrome.

2.Rapunzel Syndrome

This syndrome is named after the fairy tale princess with beautiful and astonishingly long hair in one of Brothers Grimm’s bedtime stories. The Rapunzel Syndrome is a rare intestinal condition in humans resulting from tricophagia, or the abnormal urge to eat one’s hair. This diagnosis is medically referred to as trichobezoar. In ancient times, the hair found in intestinal tracks are believed to be an elixir of some sort, able to cure lots of diseases.

3. Cinderella Syndrome

Named after the main character in one of Charles Perrault’s fairy tales, this syndrome refers to the common phenomenon in kids where they make exaggerated stories about how they are abused, mistreated, or neglected by adoptive/step-parents. This is different from ‘Cinderella Complex’, which is said to be women’s fear of independence and an unconscious desire to be taken care of by ‘stronger’ others (like metaphorical Fairy God moms or Princes Charming).

4. Peter Pan Syndrome

“I don’t want to grow up!” says J.M. Barrie’s popular character from Neverland. According to pop-psychology, sufferers of Peter Pan Syndrome are adults who are socially immature. They tend to avoid responsibilities and often feel the need to be mothered.

5. Dorian Gray Syndrome

This syndrome is named after the handsome main character of Oscar Wilde’s book The Picture of Dorian Gray who sells his soul so that his portrait will age instead of himself. Sufferers of DGS are characterized by an excessive preoccupation with their physical appearances and youth, thus having problems in terms of coping with aging. Often, people with DGS have narcissistic traits and are heavily reliant on cosmetic procedures and products.

6. Othello Syndrome

Sufferers of Othello syndrome, very much like the namesake of this disorder from one of Shakespeare’s works, are characterized by intense and often delusional distrust of their partners. This syndrome is also called morbid jealousy and is often associated with alcoholism and sexual dysfunction. It can also be found in the context of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

7. Pollyanna Syndrome

Named after Eleanor Porter’s protagonist in her best-selling children’s book, Pollyanna Syndrome is the psychological phenomenon wherein a person becomes blindly or foolishly optimistic to a point that it’s almost delusional.

8. Emperor’s Clothes Syndrome

The Emperor’s Clothes Syndrome is more like a mentality than a disorder. It got its name from Hans Christian Andersen’s tale where no one in town—until the kid speaks—is pointing out that the Emperor is naked because no one wants to be called ‘stupid’ or ‘unfit’ for their positions. People who have ECS claim that they know something even if they don’t, in order to avoid being judged as stupid or intellectually inferior to others.

9. Mowgli Syndrome

This syndrome is named after the beloved main character of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Mowgli. Mowgli is a boy who is raised by animals. Kids with this syndrome are said to have weak mental and/or physical traits, especially those who have suffered tremendous emotional stress due to parental neglect and abuse.

10. Huckleberry Finn Syndrome

This is named after one of Mark Twain’s boy characters that became darlings to the readers, Huck Finn. It’s a psychodynamic complex in which the obligations and responsibilities avoided as a child, eventuate into frequent job changes and absenteeism as an adult. The HFS may be a defense mechanism linked to parental rejection, low self-esteem and depression in an intelligent person.
